What is clean eating?

On this weight loss band wagon, I have tried a whole lot of diets.

From counting calories to eating only protein, I have tried them all.

One thing I have learnt on this journey is how much I enjoy my food.

I enjoy the smell of good food, the taste and the satisfied feeling I get when I have had a good meal.

So while I want to lose weight and look good, I also want to have a great quality of life.

So how do I have my cake and eat it?

I have decided to try eating clean.

What is clean eating?

Clean eating involves whole foods or unprocessed foods.

Whole foods are foods that have not been packaged or canned such as fruits, vegetables and fresh produce.

Coffee or Coke, which is worse?

There are a lot of people who cannot function without caffeine. They consider themselves awake only after they have taken a sip of their morning coffee while other people are soda junkies. They crave the sugary sweetness of their soda drinks and can’t go a single day without a bottle of the sweet beverage.

My question is who has the worst addiction?

I have previously written about the perils of both coffee and soda drinks. If you believe everything you read in the media soda drinks have the same level of health risks as smoking cigarettes while coffee leads to heart related diseases.

But I personally think these are just exaggeration of data, drinking coffee within reason has been linked to numerous health benefits such as a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

But no health benefits have been linked to the consumption of soda drinks.

The nutritional wonders of Amaranth

Amaranth is a weed that is consumed as food.

It is eaten in numerous countries and is praised for its numerous nutritional qualities.

The nutrients in Amaranth are carbohydrates, starch, and protein, sugars, fat and dietary fiber.

It also contains Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B9, C and E.

It is also rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium       and zinc.

It is advised that you cook amaranth leaves before consumption to remove the phytochemicals that reduce the nutritional content of the vegetables.

Amaranth grains are gluten free, easy to cook and rich in protein and so this super food is both nutritionally rich and delicious.

Let’s talk about Poop.

We all do it, young and the old, celebrities and CEO’s we all poop.

And I am sure you have looked down the toilet bowl after doing number two and wondered why your poop looked funny.

Lets take a look at different types of poop and what they say about your health.

What is poop?

Poop, stool, feces, excrement and doodoo as it is fondly called are the waste products of digested food. Once your body takes the nutrients it needs from the food you have eaten, you poop out the waste.

This is really important for your health because it is the body’s natural way of expelling waste.

How frequently should you poop?

Poop frequency is personal, some people go once a day while other go once a week. As long as you don’t have any signs of constipation such as abdominal pain then you should be fine.

Is Honey healthier than Sugar?

I have heard for years that I should reduce my sugar intake, this is really hard because I loooovvvvveeee sugar.

From candies to ice cream I love them all.

Just tell me that you have chocolates for me and you would see a huge grin on my face.

So knowing my weakness for sugar I tried to find an alternative, one that offered the same sweetness but with less health risks.

I researched saccharine, stevia, coconut sugar and honey.

Honey seemed to be my best option for the following reasons

  1. It is natural.
  2. Full of antioxidants
  3. Full of vitamins and minerals.

So filled with thoughts of the healthy sweetness of honey I overindulged.

But there is a downside to sweet “natural” foods and that is they are usually high in calories.

1 teaspoon of honey contains about 21 calories compared to 16 calories in a single teaspoon of sugar.

Why is it so hard to lose weight ?

You all know how the story goes.

I had a great Christmas, I was with friends and family and we had so much fun.

I conveniently forgot about my diet and over indulged.

Cakes, pies, candy and drinks I had them all.

Then came January and I suddenly realized that I had gained 5 extra pounds.

For the past 2 years, I have been trying to get rid of the extra 10 pounds that I am carrying around on my hips.

So here I was, weight loss New Year resolution on my mind and I had 15 pounds of excess weight to lose.

As I tied on my shoelaces and warmed up for my exercises, I strategized on my weight loss plan.

I gave my self 3 months to lose the weight and motivated with thoughts of a healthier me I took my first step.

Now it’s the second month and I still have 12 pounds to go.

Why is weight loss so HARD.

Diet versus Exercise

There is a saying that goes “you cannot exercise your way out of a bad diet”.

It’s a New Year and with it comes New Year resolutions.

The number one New Year resolution and a personal favorite of mine is Weight loss.

But what works best diets or exercises?

I have tried both options and this is my conclusion.

While I lose weight much faster with diets, I look and feel healthier with exercises.

So which is actually better?

Research has shown that for weight loss the 80 – 20 rule works best.

This means 80 percent diet and 20 percent exercise.

So even if you slave away at the gym and you don’t change your dietary habits, you tend to see little or no movements on the scale.

Doing either exercises or diets alone are not ideal either.
